| This series of modules was created for two reasons. First, science is often more accessible to students when they realize it is the work of real human beings. Second, we feel that scientists can serve as role models for students to inspire them to pursue education to the greatest extent of their abilities. Toward both these goals, we have created this series of modules which teach chemistry by exploring the lives and work of real scientists. What's more, a special effort has been made to present a group of scientists whose diversity reflects that of the students in real classrooms today. Whenever possible, the work of women scientists and scientists of under represented racial and ethnic groups has been included. We have done this so that students who use these modules will come away knowing that science is open to all. | Faces in Polymers This module looks at the chemistry of the giant molecules that make up plastics, fibers, and life itself and
Faces in the Environment This module explores enviornmental chemistry, with special emphasis on the issue of ozone depletion by profiling three scientists involved in studying and dealing with this environmental problem. |
