Database Administrator
The Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) is seeking a Database Administrator to manage the CHF constituent database and develop analytical tools using both the in-house database and other sources to maximize the information on CHF’s constituents for both fundraising and programmatic purposes. The Database Administrator will report to the Vice President of Institutional Advancement and work closely with others in advancement, IT, finance, and program areas, as well as the President’s office.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Administering and maintaining all constituent records, including biographical and financial data of individuals and organizations
- Analyzing data bases for trends and information which can advance CHF’s fundraising effectiveness
- Ensuring that CHF staff have appropriate access to and are trained in the database software to maximize their ability to directly access information essential to the performance of their job
- Working with software providers and IT staff to troubleshoot problems, implement updates, and keep abreast on new developments
This position requires a bachelors degree and two or more years experience working with database applications (experience with fundraising software a plus). Strong analytical and research skills; demonstrated organizational, planning and communication skills; and proficiency with typical Microsoft applications are essential. Nonprofit experience and an understanding of development and fundraising fundamentals are pluses.

Editor in Chief and Manager of Public Programming
The Chemical Heritage Foundation seeks a qualified editor in chief and manager of public programming for its Roy Eddleman Institute. The Roy Eddleman Institute is the public outreach and education component of CHF. The Institute’s goal is to devise novel ways to bring out the science in everyday life, and its programs provide the public with the tools to understand contemporary issues and appreciate the role of the chemical and molecular sciences in everyday life.
In addition to running CHF’s flagship quarterly publication, Chemical Heritage, the editor in chief and manager of public programming with oversee Distillations, an audio podcast, and play an active role in shaping the Institute’s additional public programming. She/He will:
- Supply intellectual leadership for Chemical Heritage, both print and online, reflecting overall excellence and depth and breadth of organization as a whole
- Manage the work of the production coordinator and program associate, assigning and prioritizing tasks and evaluating performance
- Oversee work on CHF’s podcast program, Distillations, as executive producer
- Develop and lead additional outreach programs with REI staff, program team, and ad hoc teams.
The ideal candidate has the following qualifications and interests:
- M.A. or Ph.D. or equivalent in relevant field; five to seven years of experience in writing, editing, or publishing; some knowledge of the history of science and/or chemistry preferred
- On-the-job experience in managing periodicals or publications (minimum 3 years)
- On-the-job experience or demonstrated interest in developing public programming (minimum 1 year)
- Administrative abilities, including planning, organizing, taking initiative, and sensitivity to deadlines
- Good interpersonal skills and willingness to cooperate with others at all levels of the organization
- Excellent written and oral communication and research skills
- Computer skills, especially advanced word-processing, conversions software, spreadsheets, databases

Chemical Heritage Magazine Editorial Internship
Chemical Heritage magazine seeks an energetic, organized, and highly motivated student intern to work with its editorial and production staff. The intern will work on long and short term projects resulting in the timely publication of a four-color, quarterly history of science magazine with a circulation of 21,000.
Duties:
- Perform image research for routine and feature articles; obtain pictures and permissions for image use; draft captions.
- Help maintain, check, and update files (paper and electronic).
- Perform research and fact-checking.
- Read magazine proofs for errors and typos.
- Assist in mailing complimentary copies of the magazine to authors, publishers, image providers.
- Update the magazine’s indexes.
- Write brief articles for the magazine as assigned.
- Complete and mail magazine copyright forms and other routine forms.
- Draft and mail routine correspondence.
- Compile and draft magazine’s table of contents and calendar.
- Give input and suggestions at magazine weekly meetings.
- Assist with other editorial and production tasks.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Pursuit of degree in related field (e.g. Journalism, English, Communications, History, History of Science, Chemistry).
- Computer skills: knowledge of Microsoft Office, Web browsers. Knowledge of Dreamweaver is a plus.
- Ability to work both independently and with others; good written and oral communication skills and research skills; organizational ability; attention to detail; adaptability.
- Some knowledge of or interest in chemistry and/or the history of science preferred.
- Ability to prioritize and follow up in order to meet deadlines and work on several projects at once.
Expected hours: 10–15 hours per week
Duration: Spring or fall semester
