Webmaster

CHF is seeking a Webmaster who will oversee the day-to-day maintenance of existing Web content; design and develop new content; and help develop new Web-based communications across the organization. Day-to-day work will require quickly responding to content needs as they arise, as well as working on longer-term projects. This position requires a person who can work comfortably with a wide range of people, and work on multiple projects at once.

The CHF Web site encompasses a wide range of content. We are seeking someone who demonstrates a genuine enthusiasm for CHF’s work and collections and will confidently suggest new ideas and directions that can be taken on the Web. In addition, CHF is about to embark on a major redesign of its web site. The new Webmaster will have the opportunity to come in to this project from the beginning and help shape the future of CHF’s Web-based communications.

Applicants must demonstrate expertise in web design and development and project management. An online portfolio of work is required. Please include the URL with your application. Applications without an online portfolio will not be considered.

Responsibilities:

  • Day-to-day maintenance of Web content across all of CHF’s Web-based communications (site, blogs, etc.);
  • Monitor and ensure proper functioning of Web site; perform troubleshooting, testing and quality assurance;
  • Quickly respond to web-related requests from various departments;
  • Design and implement clear, effective Web pages; create and optimize images;
  • Ensure proper functioning of e-commerce functions and all site forms;
  • Create innovative, flexible designs for presenting a wide range of content;
  • Work with external vendors to further develop site;
  • M onitor and supervise progress of assignments and projects and oversee deadlines;
  • Fulfill multiple project requests simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines;
  • Ensure CHF’s editorial standards are maintained;
  • Educate employees on Web communications and use of Web development technologies; provide training and support as needed;
  • Conduct periodic site assessments and audits; identify issues and solutions;
  • Manage site analytics; produce insightful reports monthly and as needed;
  • Work closely with the Web Communications Manager and other members of the organization to optimize existing content and develop new content;
  • Assist with long-term strategic planning of Web communications.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • B.A., B.S. or equivalent;
  • 2-4 years direct experience as a Webmaster, Web designer or Web developer;
  • Demonstrated project management and Web site development experience;
  • Experience writing technical documentation and instructional documents;
  • Excellent communication, and organizational skills;
  • Background in nonprofits, education, or museums a plus;
  • Experience with implementing content management systems a plus;
  • Knowledge of Digital Asset Management a plus.

Required Skills

  • Expert in HTML, CSS , Photoshop, and Dreamweaver; hand-code when necessary;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Web design, navigation, usability and coding standards;
  • Knowledgeable about Web 2.0, database systems, ASP, and Javascript;
  • A clear understanding of how to write for the Web;
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office products and PC environment;
  • Knowledge of XML or Flash a plus.

Advancement Systems Specialist

CHF seeks a qualified advancement information professional to support fundraising activities by: maintaining integrity of database (Raiser’s Edge), ensuring the proper and timely recording of gifts, producing routine and specialized reports and lists for internal analysis and for outreach purposes, ensuring database security, providing research on individuals and organizations to use in advancing prospective donor relationships, and implementing and maintaining a system to coordinate and monitor prospect cultivation and solicitation activities.

Responsibilities
1. Coordinate database operations to ensure accuracy and completeness of information in database including:

  • manage processing forms to ensure proper and timely recording of gifts
  • review and develop outreach, campaign, fund and appeal codes for tracking
  • prepare strategic data selects for solicitations and mailings, including lists and reports with supporting statistical detail
  • enter all charitable contributions into RE and generate acknowledgements and tax receipts
  • coordinate Blackbaud software support, supervise updates to system and software related to Raiser’s Edge as required
  • recommend and implement data entry standards, policies and procedures to ensure accurate and timely recording of membership and donation information
  • document database applications and perform regular database validation, routine systems maintenance and security functions
  • develop a database Procedures Manual and ensure that its content is systematically reviewed for accuracy and relevance and that staff has access to it and is aware of any updates
  • respond to user issues and challenges, and recommend solutions as appropriate
  • provide adequate controls to ensure security, confidentiality and integrity of constituent information.

2. Work closely with Finance to ensure accurate reconciliation of payments and donations with finance records.

3. Manage the donor prospect research function for CHF including:

  • manage plan for donor prospect research and tracking
  • identify prospects, analyze interests, affiliations and relationships, assess giving capability and propensity, evaluate and make recommendations to the Advancement Team to identify individual, foundation and corporate prospects
  • prepare comprehensive confidential profiles, brief biographical summaries, gift histories and special research reports for fundraising staff and volunteers
  • track prospects and donors through monitoring daily news, online information and internal information.

4. Participate as a member of the Foundation’s Advancement and IT teams to develop plans, share information, provide input and coordinate efforts.

5. Collaborate with Web, Accounting and Events staff to ensure timely and accurate processing of transactions, development of needed forms for e-commerce and/or registrations.

6. Serve as liaison with outside vendors on issues related to database operations.

7. Serve as point person to ensure that database functions properly for each user— including making recommendation regarding staff training, establishing and maintaining security restrictions, and collaborating with IT as needed.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities Required
1. High level of understanding of gift processing operations

2. Advanced knowledge of Blackbaud fund-raising software system (Raiser’s Edge)

3. Strong team player with high degree of organization and initiative

4. Proficiency in analyzing and utilizing database information

5. Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Blackbaud’s Researcher’s Edge

6. Ability to interpret, analyze and summarize complex biographical, business and financial data

7. Proficiency in locating & synthesizing material from multiple sources

8. Complete respect for confidentiality

9. B.A. or higher.

Program Manager, Biomedical Sciences and Technologies
Center for Contemporary History and Policy (CCHP)

The Chemical Heritage Foundation has an opening for a program manager in its Center for Contemporary History and Policy. The Center for Contemporary History and Policy organizes conferences, carries out research projects, and publishes reports that bring long-range analysis to bear on contemporary issues in science, technology, innovation, and policy. CCHP is a fast-moving and highly relevant working group that employs cross-functional teamwork to produce timely results.

Responsibilities:
The program manager will play an active role in program management and new project development centered on the recent history of the biomedical sciences and technologies. She/He will manage this program area, including conducting and processing oral histories, research and publishing, budgeting, cross-function communication, and external communication. He/She will develop projects examining the recent history of biomedicine and its policy implications (including prosopographic research, conferences, and publications); work with the CCHP director to identify new opportunities and implement new projects; and represent CCHP at meetings, events, and conferences. The position may have one or more reportables.

Background:

  • Advanced degree in a relevant social science or scientific discipline.
  • Superior research skills, including qualitative data analysis, oral history, and archival research.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects of varying scope and size and ability to carry out self-motivated and self-supervised work.

Chemical Heritage Magazine Editorial Internship

Chemical Heritage magazine seeks an energetic, organized, and highly motivated student intern to work with its editorial and production staff. The intern will work on long and short term projects resulting in the timely publication of a four-color, quarterly history of science magazine with a circulation of 25,000.

Duties:

  • Perform image research for routine and feature articles; obtain pictures and permissions for image use; draft captions.
  • Help maintain, check, and update files (paper and electronic).
  • Perform research and fact-checking.
  • Read magazine proofs for errors and typos.
  • Assist in mailing complimentary copies of the magazine to authors, publishers, image providers.
  • Update the magazine’s indexes.
  • Write brief articles for the magazine as assigned.
  • Complete and mail magazine copyright forms and other routine forms.
  • Draft and mail routine correspondence.
  • Compile and draft magazine’s table of contents and calendar.
  • Give input and suggestions at magazine weekly meetings.
  • Assist with other editorial and production tasks.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Pursuit of degree in related field (e.g. Journalism, English, Communications, History, History of Science, Chemistry).
  • Personal computer skills: knowledge of Microsoft Office, Web browsers. Knowledge of Dreamweaver is a plus.
  • Ability to work both independently and with others; good written and oral communication skills and research skills; organizational ability; attention to detail; adaptability.
  • Some knowledge of or interest in chemistry and/or the history of science preferred.
  • Ability to prioritize and follow up in order to meet deadlines and work on several projects at once.

Expected hours: 10–15 hours per week.

Duration: Spring, summer, or fall semester.

Stipend: $750 per semester.
