Making Modernity kaleidoscopes

Drawn from CHF's world-class collections, the artifacts in Making Modernity include scientific instruments and apparatus, rare books, fine art, and the personal papers of prominent scientists, all related to the chemical and molecular sciences. Rotating exhibits examine science, art, and everyday life.

Each month in 2008, we are presenting a kaleidoscope composed of objects from the exhibition. Visit this page every month to learn about the objects, download wallpaper, and send an e-card!

Mass matters
Mass spectrometers are found in some surprising places, including at the Olympics, in police labs, and even on spacecraft.

Child's play
We celebrate the "magic" chemistry brings to childhood: Jell-O, Kool-Aid, chemistry sets, and even a fairy or two.

Material world
This kaleidoscope shows synthetics: manmade materials and manmade colors. Material science changed the look and feel of everyday life, bringing new colorfast dyes to fashion and new materials to home and industry.

Chemical artifacts
They may seem unrelated, but all these objects, which include cue balls, bakelite, a nylon dress, computer chips, a still, and instruments, are all products of chemistry.
