Joseph Priestley 1 |
Background
Changes to our nation’s economic and political landscape converged nearly simultaneously and have created historic challenges to our industry’s sustainability. Not unexpectedly, the new administration in Washington has different views about how and to what extent to regulate our industry and the products we manufacture. Campaigning on the slogan of change, President Obama is so far living up to his promise. With a friendly Congress to pass his domestic agenda, will the president’s policies stifle U.S. innovation in the business of chemistry with over-reaching new laws? What will his hands-off approach to international trade mean for our industry’s ability to enter global marketplaces? What opportunities exist as a result of all these challenges? These topics and more will be explored, as well as a future look into the 2010 congressional elections.
