Chemical Heritage Foundation Hosts International Society for the Philosophy of Chemistry (ISPC) 2009 Summer Symposium

PHILADELPHIA, PA—25 August 2009The Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) has successfully hosted a symposium on the philosophy of chemistry from 13–15 August, welcoming science scholars to its headquarters in Philadelphia. The 2009 International Society for the Philosophy of Chemistry (ISPC) Summer Symposium brought together experts and guests from around the world, welcomed almost thirty speakers on the philosophy of chemistry, and facilitated lively discussions on the many facets of the field.

Twenty-seven breakout sessions and one keynote address were held on 13–15 August at CHF. Topics ranged from the problem of metaphysics in theoretical chemistry, to the art of the Periodic Table, to phlogiston in England. Ron Brashear, director of the Othmer Library at CHF and one of the administrators of the conference, said, “The ISPC 2009 Summer Symposium was a great success. By hosting their annual symposium at CHF for the first time, we gave them a forum visible to a much broader audience of historians, chemists, chemical engineers, and industrial chemists, all of whom could benefit from their insight. CHF also benefited by getting more closely connected to an important and growing community with many relevant things to say about chemistry and its practice. We look forward to more collaborations with philosophers of chemistry in the future.”

About the Chemical Heritage Foundation
The Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) fosters an understanding of chemistry’s impact on society. An independent nonprofit organization, we strive to inspire a passion for chemistry, highlight chemistry’s role in meeting current social challenges, and preserve the story of chemistry across centuries.

CHF maintains major collections of instruments, fine art, photographs, papers, and books. We host conferences and lectures, support research, offer fellowships, and produce educational materials. Our museum and public programs explore subjects ranging from alchemy to nanotechnology.
