About the Ullyots

Born in South Dakota, Glenn E. Ullyot (1910–2002) earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Minnesota and a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Illinois. Glenn’s career was made at—and he made major contributions to—SmithKline French (now GlaxoSmithKline).

The Ullyots were early supporters and benefactors of CHF. The Ullyot Meeting Hall, a state-of-the-art meeting facility at CHF, was dedicated in their name as part of the commemoration of the CHF’s 20th anniversary in 2002. Besides making this facility possible, the Ullyots established CHF’s Ullyot Public Affairs Lecture in 1990 to emphasize to the general public the positive role that chemistry plays in our lives.

Glenn Ullyot served on the CHF Council of Friends, which provides technical expertise to the foundation. The Glenn E. and Barbara Hodsdon Ullyot Scholarship supports a scholar who spends the summer conducting research at CHF on the heritage of the chemical sciences.

In addition to their support of CHF, both Barbara and Glenn played varied and significant roles in the Philadelphia Section and the national work of the American Chemical Society (ACS). A decade ago the ACS established the Ullyot Award for Meritorious Service in Glenn’s honor. The Ullyots established a scholarship fund at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and contributed to building a new city hall in Clark, South Dakota, where Glenn grew up.

The Glenn E. and Barbara Hodsdon Ullyot Scholarship is made possible through the generosity of Glenn E. and Barbara Hodsdon Ullyot .
