To advance their science and their careers, chemists need to interact. For years they created “Boys’ Clubs”—all male social organizations—to get the latest news, try out new ideas, and build professional connections. The Chemists’ Club, in New York City, was one of the most important of these organizations. In 1971, more than 70 years after its founding, Hazel Bishop became the first woman member of the Chemists’ Club, taking her place beside other chemical entrepreneurs and scientists at the club’s tables.
