Alice Hamilton

Public-health pioneer Alice Hamilton embodied passions for both chemistry and medicine. In the 1910s she directed the first government commission to investigate exposures to hazardous substances in the workplace. This led Hamilton to another first in 1919, when she became the first woman on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School.
